Wow! We had a great time at the first gathering of the Exploring the Power of Voice Meetup on March 3. We enjoyed an energy-raising sing-along, played sung-improv games, and talked about how we get “triggered” by the vulnerability of being in front of an audience. Tony also demonstrated his coaching method with two volunteers from the group.

Our second gathering will be similar to the first in format, with a bit of a twist on the previous topic. Singing high notes is challenging, especially when we’re before an audience. To combat performance jitters and sing with confidence, it’s important to prepare, both vocally and energetically.

What does this have to do with speaking? Although speakers don’t have to sing high notes, they have to pay attention to pitch and pacing, and just like singers, they must connect with the audience in an authentic way.

Whether you’re speaking or singing for an audience, it’s important to know that effective singing or speaking is an athletic activity requiring the training of internal muscles, and an energetic activity requiring the performer to welcome the vulnerability needed to connect with an audience authentically. You’ll find that with the support of the group, it’s easier than you thought!

Whether you are an experienced singer or speaker or a beginner, come on and join us in the sandbox on April 7 to sing, open up a can of fun, and joyfully explore the “high ground”!
